What is abstraction? Abstraction is where you can use any shape objects and position then in random places you an use any any elements within your images sometimes it can be 2D. Abstraction is where there are different types of lines and shapes and different formal elements in the picture when you do abstraction you have to take risk. The formal elements: Focus:Which areas appears of the photography are brightest? Are there any shadows?does the photograph allows you to guess the time of there day.
Light: which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to know the time of the day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? reflect or direct?
Line: Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create directions in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy?
Repetition: Are there any objects shapes or lines which repeat and create pattern.
Shape: Do you see geometric (straight edge) or organic, (curvy)shapes which are they?
Space: Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive(solid)spaces? Is depth created by spatial illusions?
Texture: If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the object in the picture look like they would feel?
Value/Tone: Is there a range of tones from dark to light?Where is the darkest value?Where is the lightest?
Drawing.
Week one I have tried to explore lines and shadows this shows that I can look at a picture in a different perspective.
Photograms: All about Man Ray: Man ray named his photograms rayograms he photograph everyday objects. He focus on abstract more photograms. He was an American visual artist he spent most of his year in Paris focusing on photograms but overall he focused on abstract photograms Man Ray only focused on photograms but abstract photgrams. Some of his images below.
How to make abstract photograms: First of all you need to get abstract images then you will need to get light sensitive paper after you will need to decide where you are going to arrange your objects but in a different way so that it abstract and you wouldn't know what the objects would look like then turn the light on and after turn it off then put your photo in the chemicals and then you made your abstract images.
Rectangle photograms:What I like about this piece is that the person cut up there photograms in different shapes and stuck it on different way. What I don't like is there not that much things going on in the photogram and it not that much abstract. Clouds:What I like about this is that there a poem that relates to the photograms and it only on one subject(clouds) but different clouds. What I don't like is that there not that much going on and it just simple. 3D photogram:What I like about this is that is 3D and it stands out also that there different colours to make it stand out and there a different compositions. What I don't like is that there too much going on. Hole: What I like about this is you can see the perspective of a hole what a hole looks like. What I don't like is you can see nothing but colours. Circles: What I like about this is that it in a different shape and different colours and sizes. What I don't like is that it simple and not that abstract. Black and white:What I liked about this is there different things in each images. What I don't like is that it has the names at the bottom because you should leave it blank to guess what it is. Layers:What I like is that when they layer it there different colours going on that makes it more effective. What I don't like is that actually there nothing not to like.
Harry Callahan:
My favourite images of man ray is these two because you don't know what it looks like and it would keep you question and wondering what is that photograms, so it fun to look at because you have to guess what it is.Also most of Man Ray images are abstract so if you would ever need help for abstract images you could always go and look at Man Ray images because he objects are abstract. The formal element is line because it focus it only line.
William Klein William is an abstract artist he likes taking abstract photographs and painting them. He experimented with abstract photography for a while this shows that's abstraction Is all about experimenting because he messed around with photographs and abstraction and it led him into taking photographs with abstracts clothes.
Week one abstract photograph.
In this lesson I used the element of shapes in my photographs. This made my images better because I focus on one thing what went well was that all my images a abstract because they are unclear and even better if if I had more time to complete my work.
What I like about Harry Callahan is that all of his abstraction images (photographs) all have some type of straight lines in it and they mainly focus on nature and it also focuses on one thing in the image that makes it exciting, most of Harry Callahan has negative and positive space his images are very abstract because you wouldn't really know what each image is and the element Harry has used is lines and tones.
Ralph Eugene Meatyard:
What I like about Ralph images is that they are very blurry and you c ant really tell what the image is this makes it abstract because it keeps you questioning what what did that photographer take a picture of.The element that this photographer has used is focused but it out of focus and it gives a big effect to abstraction and this photograph kinda link to harry the one above.
Keld Helmer Petersen:
What I like about Keld is that he is completely different to all the other photographer because this time he didn't take the photo he used photograms which is very interesting because because photograms are very abstract but again his element that he used is lines and although he used photograms these still link to harry and Ralph because they mainly have lines in there but in Keld he has negative and positive space. Compare:
All of these photographs have a lot in common one thing that I'm gonna talk about is the element of lines in each image there an element of lines and this links them all together also another element of positive and negative so this shows that all these abstract images have a lot in common also the images are in black and white or grey.
Abstraction homework.
What I like about my photo is that they are abstract in different ways and also they are all not the same thing and what I could improve on is that I had more time to experiment but maybe later on might go and re-take my images later on in year.
How to take a abstract photography (Ralph Eugene meatyard): Method: 1)First you would need to decide on where you are going to take the photo if you are trying to take one like Ralph then you would need to think about a park or field and the location in that park or field(it could be a the sky, tree, stones.grass, gate, sticks anything). 2)Next you will need to think about what going to be in your image and the composition of the natural resources. 3)After you have done that you can decide what angle the picture going to be taken at but make sure the element that you picked (light, tone, shape, compostion, lines)is clear in that image but your image can be abstract as much as you want.
WWW:I was able to do my photograms and changed different shapes. EBI:If I had longer to make more i would make sure that i would develop them more and maybe make them look more appealing also some could be out of focus.
Week two photographs.
These images isn't my best ones but they are fine what I would need to improve on is thinking about the composition and angles and what my image to make it look better and more my standard also i could change my location where I take these images.
I made this on photoshop above you can see the original copy I have change the gradient and the colour also the brightness and the contrast through this project I will make more as I know what to do.I also like the vibrant colours that I used in my photoshop image
The first photo I used one of my normal photos to photoshop and this wasn't really the task for the first one but I played around on photoshop because i'm not really good at it but the second image was more the task i made one photo fade into the other one.
Week three photographs.
Puzzle game.
The puzzle game is a set of cards that have abstract images on and you have to guess what the images are.My images are gonna be abstract and taken at different angles to make it harder for people to see what I'm taking picture. My games gonna be a bit tricky but it might not be everyday thing.I might photoshop some images to make it more abstract.Or move things around in the images.Overall I want to develop the game over the week and make it better maybe I will put a little twist in.puzzle em game helps you think outside the box in photography and helps you develop your idea . My ideas is to have theme maybe it will be about shapes or line because my whole abstract page has been ab out shapes and line and out of focus and it makes my images look good.
These photo are all based on lines this is a formal element that I use for a few images some uses focus some don't each photo might have more elements in them. What went well is that I can really show the formal elements of lines.Even better if that I could of taken more pictures and use different elements.
My game:
These are my final images that I have taken for my game now I am going to develop them on photoshop my key theme is shapes and lines these helped my images look a lot better over 4 weeks I have develop my images and now it helped my images look better.
So far I have created my game the stages I have done is print the photos stick them on to card and cut them out overall this was really hard to do because you had to make all the cards the same size.At this stage I'm trying to make my box so far we are making the box from scratch and my box is going to be 2cm deep.I printed my pictures out in colour so it not that hard to guess because some of my images are hard to guess, recently I asked someone to play my game and test it out and some of the pictures they guessed and some of them they haven't,this is good because my games isn't that easy and it isn't that hard. The hardest part of my project is that making the box because you had to make the box from scratch.
Saul Leiter was an a American photographer and painter who early work in 1940s and 1950s New York photographer.born on 3 December 1923 died in 26 November 2013 he focused on abstract photography the most most of his images are abstract. All the images have apart alar theme and they all link too each other they are abstract and some are out of focus they have lots of colours and they stand out.Focus some of the images are in focus and some are out of focus this makes the images look better. This is important Bec cause it makes the image stand out more and makes you wonder they are abstract because they have lots of things going on and it makes you want to explore more.
This is my first attempt of taking photos like this and I think I did really well, what went well is that I could use a contrast on light and dark and lines and this made my images look better, even better if is that I could of taken more and experiment more using these photos.
Overall in this topic I think these are my best images that I have taken in the topic because there are loads of images and I experimented more in each photos there are range of formal elects and this really makes my images look more bold and stand out more in some of the photos you have to look closely to see what type of formal element there is and some are easy to guess which one there is.Even better if I had longer to take more images and if we started to take photos like this more because it was very fun to do.
Saul Leiter Paintings
Compare:
Im going to compare a photograph and a painting of Saul leiter: In the photograph there are more dull colours Saul uses more dull colours in his photography then his painting in his painting if he made is photograph more interesting like his painting then they would be harder to identfiy the image and it would make it better cause it good to see what it could be and he should use more lines in his photograph .
I think I can improve my painting by looking at the colours properly and looking at the contrast what went well is that I was able to notice the lines that was in the photograph but if I made the paintbrush dinner the the lines would stand out more and be more affective.
These are my last photo and these have really help my abstraction project look better because there are lots of elements that have focus, light, light these have really stood out in my images my images are also colourful and it makes them look very detail.Even better if maybe I could have photoshop them to make them look better to challenge myself.
Aaron Siskind
Aaron Siskind is a abstract photographer in some of his mages he focus on things that are old and starts to peel away this is interesting because not all photographers have done this, in his photographer he focus on black and white and the contrast Aaron siskind explore different objects and this really makes his photographs abstract for example a nail and you can really see how the shape is a different size in certain area this photographer really wants me to explore more of abstraction because he looked at a different side of it, he took pictures more of natural world and never Photoshop them.
This is my final out come for abstraction i wanted to link the images together to have bright colours for some of the images to be in focus and out of focus i think they ids a good collage.
Evaluation
In unit 1 this wasn't my favorite topic but it made me explore more about images and use abstraction in anything the research help me lot at first i researched man rays images because i wanted to see if photo grams would give me a different perspective i researched many artist and looked at their image and they gave me lots of ideas that i could do with my images which helped a lot. I carried out a lot of experiment while doing abstraction but it was hard to focus on one thing. I manage to do a final piece but i wasn't proud of what i finished with because i feel like i could of done better but i did help me futher in other projects
